Admit Card Problems and How to Fix Them

Admit card trouble usually appears at the worst moment. This troubleshooting guide covers the common problems, what you can fix yourself and when to contact the helpdesk.

Start with a calm checklist

When an admit card will not download or something on it looks wrong, the first instinct is to panic or search social media. A better first step is to work through a short checklist, then escalate through the official channel. Most problems fall into a handful of categories, and many can be solved in minutes.

Each conducting body publishes its own helpdesk details and instructions. Verify the latest notice on the official site — for example SSC, UPSC, IBPS or NTA — for the exact process for your exam.

Problem 1: "Invalid credentials" or login failure

This is the most frequent issue, and the cause is usually simple.

  • Check whether the portal wants your registration number, application number or roll number. These are different.
  • Check the date of birth format the portal expects. Some want DD/MM/YYYY, others use a date picker.
  • Try the password you set during application, and note that passwords are often case-sensitive.
  • Use the official "forgot registration number" or "forgot password" option, which sends details to your registered email or mobile.
  • Try a different browser or clear your browser cache, especially if the page loads partially.

If none of these work, the helpdesk listed in the notice is the next step. Have your name, date of birth, application details and payment reference ready.

Problem 2: The admit card is not released yet for your shift

Many bodies release admit cards region-wise or shift-wise, a few days before each exam date. Others first release an exam city slip. If friends have theirs and you do not, check whether their exam date is earlier than yours. Read the latest release notice carefully before assuming something has gone wrong.

Problem 3: A spelling mistake in your name or parent's name

Compare the admit card with your application form. If the error was in your application, it usually cannot be changed at this stage, but small spelling differences are often manageable at the exam if your photo ID clearly identifies you. If the error was introduced by the portal and your application was correct, contact the helpdesk with a copy of your submitted form.

In either case, keep evidence: the application PDF, your ID and, if relevant, documents showing both spellings refer to you. Raise the issue now rather than at document verification months later.

Problem 4: Photo or signature missing, blurred or wrong

A missing or unclear photo is a serious issue because invigilators use it to confirm your identity. Steps that usually help:

  1. Check your submitted application to see whether the photo uploaded correctly.
  2. Contact the helpdesk immediately and ask for written guidance.
  3. Carry extra passport-size photographs that match the one you uploaded.
  4. Carry the original photo ID named in the instructions, and a second ID if allowed.
  5. If the helpdesk advises an undertaking or gazetted officer attestation, prepare it before exam day.

Never paste a new photo over the printed one unless the official instructions specifically ask you to.

Problem 5: Wrong category, gender or disability details

These details can affect seat allocation, scribe permission or compensatory time. If they are wrong on the admit card but correct on your application, raise it with the helpdesk with a copy of your application. If you need a scribe or extra time and it is not reflected, read the notice for the procedure and the certificate format required, and act quickly.

Problem 6: Exam centre is very far away

Centre allotment rules differ. Some bodies allocate within your chosen city or region, others within a zone, and capacity constraints mean candidates are sometimes placed farther than expected. In most cases the centre cannot be changed once allotted, unless the conducting body announces a specific change facility.

Practical steps: plan your travel early, check the venue on a map using the full address, look for nearby accommodation if the reporting time is early, and keep the helpline number handy in case of venue changes announced late.

Problem 7: The PDF will not open or prints badly

Download it again on a computer if possible. Use a standard PDF reader rather than an in-app preview. Print on plain A4 paper unless the instructions specify otherwise, and check that the barcode or QR code, photograph and all pages are clear. Some exams require all pages, including the instructions, to be printed.

Problem 8: Lost or damaged admit card before the exam

Usually you can simply download and print it again from the portal while the link is active. That is why saving your login details and a digital copy matters. Keep at least two printouts if the exam is outside your city.

Problem 9: ID document issues on exam day

Read the list of acceptable photo IDs well in advance. If the ID shows a different name format, carry supporting documents. If your ID has expired, renew it or carry another accepted document. Some exams require the ID number on the admit card to match the ID you carry; check this when you download it.

Problem 10: Unofficial sites and "admit card download" scams

Search results and messages sometimes lead to look-alike sites asking for your password or a fee to "generate" your admit card. A genuine admit card is free and comes only from the official portal where you applied. If you entered your password on a suspicious site, change it on the official portal immediately.

An example timeline that works

Sana (example) downloads her exam city slip as soon as it is announced and books travel. When her admit card is released, she downloads it the same day and finds her photo is faint. She emails the helpdesk with her application number, prints two extra copies of her original photograph, and carries both her primary and secondary IDs. Because she acted a week before the exam, she has time to receive guidance. The lesson is not that every problem gets solved, but that early action keeps your options open.

When to escalate and how

Use the channels listed in the notice: helpline numbers, official email addresses or a grievance link inside the candidate login. Write a short message with your registration details, the problem, what you have already tried and an attachment if relevant. Keep a record of when you contacted them. Avoid social media complaints as your only channel; they are not a substitute for the official route.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter the exam without a printed admit card?

Most exams require a printed admit card. Check the instructions for your exam; some list specific requirements for the printout.

My exam city slip says one city but my admit card shows another. Which is correct?

The admit card is generally the final document, but confirm through the helpdesk and the latest notice if there is a mismatch.

Can someone else download my admit card for me?

Anyone with your login details could, which is why you should never share them. Download it yourself from the official portal.

What if the official website crashes on the day before my exam?

Keep trying at off-peak hours and check for official announcements. This is why downloading early is so important.
