What this section covers
Indian Railways is one of the largest public employers in the country. Recruitment for most Group C posts is handled by Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), while Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) of the zonal railways generally recruit for Level 1 posts and apprentices. This page explains how centralised employment notices work, what stages candidates go through, and how to avoid the many fake railway websites.
We do not reproduce vacancy counts or schedules. Verify the latest notice on the official site through the links below.
Official starting points
- rrbcdg.gov.in — gateway to the Railway Recruitment Boards and their regional websites.
- indianrailways.gov.in — the Ministry of Railways website with links to zonal railways and their recruitment cells.
- The individual RRB or RRC website named in the employment notice.
How railway recruitment generally works
- Centralised Employment Notice: published by the RRBs for a category of posts, listing posts, eligibility, medical standards and the exam scheme.
- Choice of RRB: candidates usually apply to one RRB, and the choice affects which zone's vacancies they compete for.
- Online application through the portal specified in the notice, with photo, signature and other documents.
- Computer-based tests, which may be in one or more stages depending on the post.
- Skill, aptitude or physical efficiency tests for posts that require them.
- Document verification and medical examination according to the medical standard prescribed for the post.
- Empanelment and appointment by the zonal railway or production unit.
Medical standards matter early
Railway posts are classified into medical categories with different vision and fitness requirements. A candidate who cannot meet the standard for a post may not be appointed to it even after clearing the exams. Read the medical standard table in the notification before choosing posts, and get your eyesight checked in advance if a post requires a high visual standard.
Spotting fake railway notices
Look-alike websites using words such as "railway bharti" in their address, and messages offering jobs "without exam" in exchange for money, are common. Railway recruitment for regular posts is done through published notices and tests. Check that any website you use is linked from the official Indian Railways or RRB pages.
Common mistakes
- Applying to multiple RRBs for the same notice when the rules permit only one.
- Ignoring post-wise medical standards while filling preferences.
- Not reading the notice for the exam city slip and travel authority rules where applicable.
- Using a different photo from the one submitted, which can cause trouble at verification.
- Overlooking age relaxation documents needed for relaxed categories.
After you apply
Keep your registration details, the confirmation page and a copy of the photograph you uploaded in one place. Railway recruitments can run for many months between application and appointment, with separate notices for each test, document verification and medical examination. A short monthly check of your RRB's website and your registered email keeps you from missing a stage you qualified for.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an RRB and an RRC?
In general, RRBs recruit for Group C posts through centralised notices, while RRCs of zonal railways recruit for Level 1 posts and apprentices. Each notice states which body is conducting it.
Can I change my chosen RRB later?
Usually the RRB chosen at the time of application cannot be changed. Read the notice before submitting.
Are railway exams held in regional languages?
Many railway computer-based tests offer a choice of languages. The notice lists the options for that recruitment.
Where do I check railway results?
On the website of the RRB or RRC to which you applied, reached through the official gateway.
